The footage showing a boxfight between the scenes of the chess game make the calm and focused atmosphere become more one of an actual fight. So the opponents metaphorically battle with their fists of mind. Because of the Kuleshov effect our brain automatically connects the players to the fighters and the game seems to get some kind of violent character.
